Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the 2008-2009 Volvo Ocean Race at Fan Pier Boston stopover. Your volunteer participation is absolutely critical to the successful execution of this remarkable international event.

The Volvo Ocean Race is one of the world’s most formidable extreme nautical adventures. Totaling over 37,000 nautical miles, the 2008-2009 race is the 10th around the world contest, and is the ultimate test of the competing sailors and their race boats.

While every stop-over city around the world is promising unique celebrations, the event team in Boston is committed to executing the most exciting and memorable stop-over city experience. In order to achieve our goal, we will need many talented and committed individuals. Our volunteer requirement begins April 12th with the Race Village set up, and concludes May 16th when the race boats begin leg 7 to Galway.

Volunteers, as you might imagine, are needed in many areas, with significant needs shore side in the set-up and management of the Race Village. The village will feature many interactive experiences, marine industry displays, event sponsor consumer products, youth sailing events, demonstrations and marine related classes - many requiring involvement by our volunteer team members.

We have on the water needs as well, although very specific. The race committee has already been designated. However, boat owners with power boats 22’-45’ are in great demand to marshal spectator boats, fulfill photo boat roles and set and retrieve exclusion buoys during racing days. This is a great opportunity to enjoy your boat early in the season and be up close to the on the water events.
