Math & Meteorlogy

Story Image

If you think sailing is fun and math isn’t, think again. Sailing is all about applying mathematical principles — to the shape of the boat’s hull, the design of the sails, the length of the mast and keel, the speed of the wind and water, and those are just the basics. Speeds, directions, and positioning are all determined by sailors with a sophisticated grasp of numbers and formulas.

Long before GPS, sailors got around by the stars. And meteorology, which plays a part in myth and superstition, was an essential element in helping travelers of the sea find their way. Early navigators studied the skies and used crude and later increasingly sophisticated instruments to map their courses, with the heavens as their guide.
