Departure to Galway

Story Image

After Boston, there could be no more appropriate next stop for the sleek Volvo Ocean Race competitors than Galway, the capital of the west coast of Ireland, home to a number of Boston-based businesses. The ancient city of Galway, like Boston, has a strong maritime history, and prominent harbor. The proud Irish heritage of Boston and its population, as well as its successful modern economy, are reflected in the Galway destination, with that growing city’s Institute of Technology, theaters, cathedral, castle, and docks. Galway City is known as a city of culture, featuring a popular summer arts festival, and is a top city for tourism in Ireland. Like Boston, it is also known as a “walking city,” and it boasts the John F. Kennedy Park. The highly visible leg of the race starting from Boston next May could be one of the fastest in the 37,000-mile ocean spectacle.
