Arrrival From Rio
After the longest and fastest leg of the Volvo Ocean Race -- 12,300 miles averaging an estimated 15 knots over 34 days from Quingdao, China -- Rio de Janeiro will seem every bit the paradise of rhythm and relaxation that it’s known to be. For 22 days, the “cidade maravilhosa,” or marvelous city, will offer its Ipanema and other loved beaches to the Volvo race crews and throngs of tourists and race enthusiasts. Rio’s reputation for sun and sensuality may seem in contrast to the particular charms of Boston, the next stop, where the crews will be welcomed at burgeoning Fan Pier following an ocean leg of a little more than two weeks. But the two cities, Boston and Rio, have considerable amounts in common: diverse cultures and populations, spectacular harbors, and world-class reputations as destinations for travelers who love one-of-a-kind cities.
